GottaClimb LLC Launches R&D Initiative to Commercialize NASA-Engineered Freeze-Resistant Hydration Technology for High-Altitude Mountaineering
Santa Fe, NM | 02/16/2026 – GottaClimb LLC today announced the launch of a new research and development initiative focused on adapting NASA-engineered technology into a commercially available, freeze-resistant, high-altitude personal hydration system designed specifically for mountaineers operating in extreme cold environments.
The project aims to address a persistent and potentially life-threatening challenge in high-altitude climbing: maintaining adequate hydration in sub-freezing conditions.
At high elevations, climbers routinely face temperatures well below freezing, high winds, and extended exposure that can quickly freeze traditional hydration systems. When hydration hoses and reservoirs freeze, climbers are often forced to stop, remove gloves, access packs, or melt snow—actions that consume valuable time and increase exposure risk. As a result, many mountaineers under-hydrate on summit days and during alpine pushes, contributing to dehydration-related complications such as acute mountain sickness (AMS), decreased cognitive function, reduced physical performance, frostbite risk, and in severe cases, life-threatening medical emergencies.
A Technology Transfer Approach
GottaClimb LLC is exploring the adaptation of NASA-developed thermal management and freeze-mitigation technologies originally engineered for use in extreme aerospace environments. By integrating advanced insulation systems, active or passive heating elements, and energy-efficient thermal control strategies, the company aims to develop a chest-mounted, freeze-resistant hydration platform that can function reliably in sustained sub-zero, high-altitude conditions.

Dehydration reduces blood volume and impairs circulation, making it harder for your body to distribute heat and leaving you more susceptible to cold-related illnesses. Dehydration is also known as a contributor to altitude-related illness and impaired decision-making in mountaineering. In severe alpine environments, small performance losses can compound into dangerous situations.
Cold air is dry, causing moisture loss through breathing and increased urine production, often without the sensation of thirst. Staying hydrated is crucial for preventing hypothermia in cold weather. Water regulates body temperature, aids in circulation, and ensures efficient metabolism to generate heat.
By improving hydration reliability, GottaClimb aims to reduce preventable medical incidents in the climbing community and support safer performance in extreme conditions.

• Maintains Blood Volume: Adequate hydration ensures your blood volume is sufficient to flow smoothly, which is essential for transporting heat from your warm core to your hands, feet, nose, and ears.
• Prevents Reduced Circulation: Dehydration can lead to poor circulation, which increases the risk of cold-weather injuries. When you are dehydrated, your body may struggle to distribute warmth to your skin and underlying tissues.
